Ben C. Clay (right) of Winslow hooked a pending state record channel catfish June 5 at Show Low Lake. Clay and Rick Harris of Winslow (who is blind), along with guide Marc Sargent, fought the fish for an hour and 10 minutes before landing it. The three were fishing at the upper end of the lake at about 10:30 p.m. using a medium poles, 10-pound test line and anchovies. After about 35 minutes, the huge catfish hit. The fish weighed in at 32 pounds, eight ounces and is 33 inches long. If it becomes official, it will surpass the current record by four ounces.
It wore all three of us out," Sargent said. "It kept running and running on us. It was crazy." Sargent, pictured above with Clay and the catch, runs a guide service year-round at Show Low Lake. "I won't fool with anything but anchovies. All the fishing is picking up (at Show Low Lake). Even bass, people have been catching smallmouth. The walleye are spawning right now, and the catfish begin to spawn in June." |
